CANAL TYPE first came about in my first year of university, when my tutor suggested that I find inspiration in the streets of Manchester.

I noticed these shapes on the bridges along the canals, and I started to develop a modular typeface with them. I enjoyed this process - it got me out of a creative rut. During my final year of university, I often found myself feeling similarly, stuck for new ideas - I decided to pick this typeface back up during a recent project, and since then I’ve refined it and developed it from vector illustrations into a real, functioning typeface.
